Articulate Storyline 360

AI simulations in Articulate Storyline

Put a scenario-based AI simulation on any Storyline slide. The simulation writes pass/fail, score, and completion back to your Storyline variables, so your triggers can react to how the learner did.

Part of your course logic, not an overlay

Embed with a Web Object

Every simulation has an embed URL on its Publishing tab. In Storyline, go to Insert, then Web Object, and paste the URL. Size it to fill the area where you want the conversation to appear.

The simulation writes to your Storyline variables

A one-line Execute JavaScript trigger loads the devlin.ai bridge on the slide. The bridge then calls SetVar on the Storyline player each time the simulation updates a variable.

After the evaluation, results land in variables such as Sim_Pass, Sim_Score, and Sim_Feedback. A completion variable tells your course the conversation has ended.

Your own variables, set by the AI

Add custom True/False, Number, or Text variables and describe when the AI should set them. For example, a characterMood variable can change a character image as the conversation goes. Use Storyline's own triggers to react.

Report results to your LMS

Call sendResultsToLMS() from an Execute JavaScript trigger after Sim_EvalComplete is true. Score, pass/fail, session time, and a completed status are written to the learner's existing SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 session. LMS reporting is included on the Core, Team, and Enterprise plans.

Start and end voice sessions from your buttons

For voice simulations, add startVoiceSession() or endVoiceSession() to an Execute JavaScript trigger on your own course buttons. Ending this way works like the End Call button: the session wraps up, the evaluation runs, and results flow into your Storyline variables.

Reset for another attempt

Call restartSimulation() from any Execute JavaScript trigger. It reloads the simulation and resets the Storyline variables the simulation set.

How it works

  1. 1

    Build your simulation

Create the scenario in devlin.ai and set up its variables under Design, then Variables.

  2. 2

    Add a Web Object

In Storyline, go to Insert, then Web Object, and paste the embed URL from the Publishing tab.

  3. 3

    Create matching variables

Open Storyline's Variables panel and create the variables the Publishing tab lists. The names must match exactly.

  4. 4

    Load the bridge

On the same slide, add an Execute JavaScript trigger that runs when the timeline starts, and paste the one-line code from the Publishing tab.

  5. 5

    Build your course logic

Use triggers such as When variable changes to branch, show a results layer, or send results to your LMS.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to write code?

No. The Publishing tab gives you everything to paste: the embed URL for the Web Object and a one-line Execute JavaScript trigger. Optional features, like sending results to your LMS, are single function calls you paste into a trigger.

Which Storyline variables does the simulation set?

Any custom variables you define, plus automatic ones: a completion variable, turn count, session start, timer, and whether the character is speaking. With evaluation turned on, it also sets Sim_EvalComplete and, depending on your evaluation settings, pass/fail, score, and feedback. The Publishing tab lists the exact names and types to create.

How do results get to my LMS?

Publish your Storyline course to your LMS as usual. When the course runs there, sendResultsToLMS() writes score, pass/fail, session time, and a completed status to the learner's existing SCORM 1.2 or SCORM 2004 session. Storyline previews and web-only hosting have no SCORM connection, so results are only reported inside an LMS.

Can learners talk to the simulation inside Storyline?

Yes. Voice simulations have their own Web Object URL, and learners can hold a spoken conversation inside the course. In Chrome and Edge, sessions started from your course buttons usually begin right away. Safari requires a tap inside the simulation itself, so Safari learners will see its start button.

What if one slide has more than one simulation?

Pass the simulation's embed key to target one, for example endVoiceSession("your-key"). For LMS reporting, the score sent is the average across the simulations and the course passes only when every simulation passes.

Why don't I see the simulation in Storyline's preview?

Web Objects do not render reliably in Storyline's built-in preview. Preview the published course in a browser instead, and choose Load Web Object from the Internet when you add it.

Do coaches work in Storyline too?

Yes. Coaches are added with a Web Object too, and they report completion, turn count, timing, and your custom variables back to your course.
